Here is a summary of the new Public Instant Messaging Connectivity for OCS

From July 2009, federation with Windows Live (MSN) becomes part of the Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Standard Client Access License (CAL).

Before you begin you need:

  • A Microsoft Volume Licensing agreement number
  • At least one Access Edge service FQDN
  • At least one SIP domain name

To begin, access the provisioning site at https://ocspic.livemeeting.com/provision/

After installing Communicator Web Access on a Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Front End server, the CWA page is not displayed when access the CWA URL using Internet Explorer.

No error is shown when accessing the URL of the CWA web site. Only a blank page is shown, without any error message.

Reading the IIS log files shows that no activity is generated by the client requests.

Cause:

This error is caused by the insufficient rights of the CWAService account used by the application pool. To verify that this is the problem, access the application pools in IIS manager and modify the Identity of the application pool to LocalSystem (this is for test purpose only) Now verify that the page is displayed as it should and that login is possible.

Solution:

To fix this the easy way is to remove the Communicator Web Access installation and delete the CWAService Account. The reinstall the CWA component and recreate the CWAService account by using the setup program.

Kind regards,

Rasmus

After you install Communicator Web Access (CWA) on the Office Communications Server (OCS) front end server, Office Communicator is unable to synchronize address book.

Users are prompted to enter username and password to access the address book web service, but none are accepted.

Message that users receive:
“Type your credentials to access the corporate address book”

After clicking cancel you then see in Office Communicator that the address book failed to download.

Message in Communicator:
“Cannot synchronize address book”

Cause:

This error is caused by a wrong or missing SPN registration. For some reason the CWA installation removes a SPN registration from the RTCComponentService account during the setup process, resulting in users are unable to login to the Address Book web service with Kerberos

Solution:

To solve this issue, you need to recreate the SPN records for the RTCComponentService account. There are several ways to do this, but I always use the GUI.

On a Domain Controller, Open “ADSI Edit” MMC console. From here locate the RTCComponentService users object (default in the “Users” container). Right click to access Properties. In the object properties page, locate the ServicePrincipalName attribute.

For OCS Standard Edition:
Enter these 2 records:
http/HOSTNAME (where hostname is the short name of the OCS front end server)
http/FQDN (where fqdn is the full DNS name of the front end server)

For OCS Enterprise Edition:Enter these 4+ records:http/HOSTNAME (where hostname is the short name of the all the OCS front end servers)http/FQDN (where fqdn is the full DNS name of all the front end servers)
http/HOSTNAME (where hostname is the short name of the OCS pool)
http/FQDN (where fqdn is the full DNS name of the pool)

Restart the front end server(s)

After the server boots, address book synchronization should work again.

Kind regards,

Rasmus

NOTE:

Please note that it is no longer supported to have CWA on the Front End server. In fact CWA must always be on its own server.

Customers has been asking if it is possible to forward response group calls to mobile phones using the “Forward to” or the “Simultaneous Ringing” option in Communicator 2007 R2

Microsoft has now replied to this question on the Communications Server team blog:

Simultaneous Ringing disabled for Response Group Service Calls:
http://communicationsserverteam.com/archive/2009/07/16/Response_Group.aspx

Reading through the article I can understand the argument, but I think there should be an override option in the server configuration.

Please post your comment below if you have experience on this subject.
